How do I decide between closures (Velcro or Hook and Eye)?

Posted by Brenda Lasher on January 7, 2019

We recommend hook and eye closures for greater growth allowance and the most security. Velcro can pick up a lot of lint over time that may affect its performance and hook and eye closures can easily be moved with growth. However, if the dancer is very young and will have trouble handling a hook and eye closure, you may want to select the Velcro.

Note: If you want to add an inch for growth, you need to select the hook and eye option – it is not available with Velcro closures.

Note: If you choose a Velcro closure, make sure to close the Velcro before putting the skirt into your ballet bag or washing machine.

What is the proper way to measure?

Posted by c2140 on January 7, 2019

We need both a waist measurement and a finished length measurement to make your character skirt.

The waist measurement should be taken with good posture, standing tall but not holding your stomach in. If you select a hook and eye closure and would like growing room built into the skirt , we are happy to add an extra eye at no additional cost. If you would like an extra eye sewn on, there is an option on the order form to request that.

Note: The extra inch for growth is not available with the Velcro closure option.

The standard length for a character skirt is mid calf. You cannot properly measure your own length because you need to stand straight in order to be accurate. It is best to have someone else do it for you, measuring from the waist down to the middle (widest part) of the calf. Please note that some teachers prefer the skirts a little shorter and some a little longer so it is best to check with your teacher before you measure.

How do I care for my skirt?

Posted by c2140 on January 7, 2019

Your character skirt must be washed separately in cool water the first time you wash it. After the first washing, your character skirt can be laundered with like colors in cool water. It is best to hang the character skirt to dry and then iron.

If you have chosen a Velcro closure it is important that the Velcro be closed during washing.

The character skirt may also be dry cleaned.

What color ribbons can I choose?

Posted by c2140 on January 7, 2019

Dancers need to check with their dance teachers to see if there is a school color combination that is required prior to ordering. If there are no recommendations from the teacher, there are 23 different ribbon colors to select from.

Due to variations between different computer monitors, colors may appear different in person. We will be happy to send ribbon samples to you upon request.
